Just before Chris and I started working on FLO, I gained an interest in iPhone app development. With no more knowledge then what printf() meant, (the most basic function of C programming) I started on the journey. During the last few years, development has taken a back seat for long periods of time when things got busy with FLO. The last few months I finally had time to marry the two things I love to create something for our followers.
I wanted to create something that didn't lose it's novelty after the first week and kept giving the user a reason to come back. I hope I've accomplished that and that you enjoy it as much as we at FLO Cycling do. We've been beta testing the app and it's something we use on a daily basis. The rest of this article is going to walk you through the app. At the end of the article I will also list a few interesting facts about the development. At least I find them interesting. =]
What Does the App Do?
The app is a place to get all of the most recent cycling news in one place. We've partnered with several major triathlon and cycling publishers and are delivering their RSS content to one location. When the app is opened it downloads the most recent articles from the publishers and allows you to view them, share them with friends via Facebook, Twitter, or email and allows you to add any of your favorite articles to a Favorites section.
Today we are happy to announce that the following feeds are included:
1. FLO Cycling
3. Velo News
4. Cycling News
5. Road Bike Action
3. Velo News
4. Cycling News
5. Road Bike Action
If you do not see your favorite feed here please let us know. We have tried working with several popular feeds and some have respectfully declined. We know Slowtwitch will be a popular request but they are one of the groups that declined and we respect their decision.

View by View WalkThrough
The home view is what will greet you when you open the app. Here's what is looks like.
Home View of the FLO Cycling iPhone App
1. The FLO Logo: The logo in the top left corner is used the refresh the feeds. When you touch it, it will search all of the feeds in the app for any new articles.
2. Latest Article Section: The Latest Article section displays the most recent article that's been published. Touching the article will take you to the article.
3. About Us Button: The About Us button takes you to our website and tells you our story. (Picture at the end of the blog post)
4. Contact Us Button: The Contact Us button allows you to send us an email. If you've got questions, please feel free to ask. (Picture at the end of the blog post)
5. News Feeds Button: The News Feeds button takes you to the next page and all of the content. Take a look at the next picture and walk through below.
Main Feed Page
The main feed page shows what publications you can gain access to and how many new articles are available. To read the lastest articles from each publisher, simply touch the logo of the publisher you're interested in. We will take a look at the most recent articles from FLO in the next picture.
Publisher Feed View
The publisher feed views give you a preview of the most recent articles showing the title and publication date. All articles that have not been read are marked with a blue rectangle to the left. If you are like me and can't live with having any unread articles, I added the edit button in the top right to allow to mark all articles as read. I've added a picture of the screen shot at the end of the blog article.
When you are interested in an article, simply touch it and it will load the article in the next view. Take a look at the next screen shot to see what the article view looks like.
The Article View allows you to view the article. I know, pretty obvious right? There are four buttons up top. The back button takes you back to the previous view, the middle two act as back and forward buttons for the web browser, and the one on the right allows you to do a number of things. Take a look at the next screen shot to see what pops up when you hit the share button.
Here you can share the article via Facebook, Twitter, email, or add the article to your Favorites section. That brings us to the Favorites section. Take a look at the next screen shot to find where you can access your Favorites.
Back in the main feeds view you will find a section called favorites at the bottom of the list. Any articles you add to favorites you will find here.
The articles in the Favorites section can be read over again and if you no longer need the article you can delete it by swiping left or right on the row the article is in.
That pretty much sums up the app.
Interesting Development Facts
Development Hours: To be honest I lost count but I would guess about 160,200. This is after 2000+ hours of learning how to become a developer ;)
Number of Lines of Code: 12,921

Supported Devices: iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, and iPhone 5. Also any future devices.
First of all we would like to thank the publishers for working with us and allowing us to use the feeds. You all produce great content and we appreciate your efforts.
We hope you download it and enjoy it. Please feel free to offer you suggestions and rate the app in the app store if you like. It's been fun marry two of the things I love.

FLO DISC Availability
As you can see above, we will be limited on the number of FLO DISCS. We've been working hard on the new 2013 model. We've started production but development took a little longer then expected. All DISCS in this order will be the 2013 model. We will have another shipment leaving at the end of March with plans for more FLO DISCS. We are sorry that we cannot offer more.
Web Server (We've beefed things up!)
Anyone who was part of Pre-Order #3 knows that we had big problems with our server. We've done our best to change that for Pre-Order #4 by teaming up with RackSpace. We will be creating four replicas of our web server, running the traffic through a load balancer, and beefing up our database to 30 GB of ram. In total we will be running 90 GB of ram vs. the 2 GB we crashed. I know it a lot of detail but we want you to know we are doing our best to keep things smooth this time around.
We will have more details available shortly and will be sure to let everyone know though email. If you have any questions please feel free to let us know.

The guys over at AeroGeeks are putting together a series on affordable aero products and they were excited to get their hands on a set of our FLO 60s for a review. They've just put up their thoughts after the first ride. Take a look at what they had to say HERE. We are really happy with the review!
Thanks, AeroGeeks. Looking forward to your more detailed report.
